All Quiet on the Western Front
Overview
They promised him glory. Paul Bäumer enlists for the Great War drunk on patriotism and finds only mud, rats, and mechanized slaughter. Berger's German-language remake strips every shred of romance from combat — the tank sequence alone is nightmare fuel — and it deserved every Oscar it took home. This is the anti-war film as blunt instrument. You'll finish it exhausted, angry, and certain no one should ever glamorize this again.
