Overview

Anora is a 2024 romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Sean Baker. The film stars Mikey Madison as Anora, a young, feisty sex worker from Brooklyn; and Mark Eydelshteyn as Ivan, the spoiled, immature son of a Russian oligarch. The film is set in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, and in Las Vegas. Anora is a stripper and an escort. She meets Ivan, a wealthy, charming young man, at a club. They have a passionate, whirlwind romance, and they get married in Las Vegas. Ivan's parents are furious, and they send a group of thugs to annihilate the marriage. The film is a funny, chaotic, and ultimately heartbreaking exploration of class, power, and the American Dream. Anora is a fierce, resourceful, and vulnerable protagonist. She fights back against the thugs, and she refuses to be a victim. The film ends with Anora being abandoned by Ivan, who returns to Russia. She is left alone, crying in a car. Anora won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was praised for its performances, its direction, and its raw, unflinching depiction of working-class life.
