Crimson Tide is a 1995 submarine thriller film directed by Tony Scott, starring Denzel Washington as Lt. Commander Ron Hunter, the executive officer of the USS Alabama, a nuclear submarine, and Gene Hackman as Captain Frank Ramsey, the commanding officer. The submarine is ordered to launch its nuclear missiles, but the order is incomplete. Hunter refuses to launch, believing that the order may be a mistake. Ramsey insists on launching. The film is a tense, psychological thriller, set almost entirely on the submarine. It explores themes of command, loyalty, and the morality of nuclear war. Crimson Tide was a critical and commercial success, earning over $157 million worldwide. It won one Academy Award for Best Sound.
