Saving Private Ryan
Overview
After the beach, the film goes quiet — and that's the point. Spielberg opens with twenty minutes of D-Day chaos that rewrote war cinema, then follows Tom Hanks's squad on a mission that makes less sense the further they walk. The question isn't whether they'll find Ryan; it's whether the cost was sane. The final cemetery scene still lands like a punch. War films don't get more honest than this.
