Overview

Foe is a 2023 science fiction psychological thriller film directed by Garth Davis, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Iain Reid. The film stars Saoirse Ronan as Henrietta, a young woman living on a remote farm in a near-future America; Paul Mescal as her husband, Junior; and Aaron Pierre as Terrance, a mysterious stranger. The world is facing an environmental crisis, and the Earth is becoming uninhabitable. Junior is selected to go to a space station, and he will be replaced by a biological android, also named Junior, to keep Henrietta company. The film is a slow-burn, atmospheric, and unsettling exploration of identity, marriage, and the nature of consciousness. The film takes a shocking twist: Henrietta is an android, and the "real" Henrietta is dead. The film was a critical disappointment, but it has gained a cult following for its performances and its philosophical themes.
