Overview

The Power of the Dog is a 2021 psychological drama film written and directed by Jane Campion, based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Phil Burbank, a wealthy, charismatic, and deeply cruel rancher in 1920s Montana. Phil is a man of contradictions: he is intelligent and cultured, but he is also brutal and sadistic. He torments his brother's new wife, Rose (Kirsten Dunst), and her effeminate son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). The film is a slow-burn, atmospheric, and deeply unsettling exploration of toxic masculinity, repressed homosexuality, and the destructive power of the American West. Benedict Cumberbatch gives a career-best performance as the monstrous, tragic Phil. The Power of the Dog was a critical and commercial success, earning over $39 million on a $35 million budget (it was released on Netflix). It was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning one for Best Director for Jane Campion. It was the first film directed by a woman to be nominated for Best Picture in back-to-back years. The film is a masterpiece of psychological cinema and a must-see for fans of Jane Campion.
