The Promised Land
Overview
The Promised Land is a 2023 Danish historical drama film directed by Nikolaj Arcel, starring Mads Mikkelsen as Captain Ludvig Kahlen, a Danish soldier who tries to tame the barren heath of Jutland in the 18th century. The film is set in 1755. Kahlen is a proud, stubborn, and impoverished soldier. He petitions the king for permission to settle the heath, a desolate, unforgiving land that is known to be infertile. He promises to build a colony and to cultivate the land. He is opposed by the ruthless local magistrate, Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), who wants the land for himself. The film is a classic Western, set in Denmark. It is a story of a lone man against the wilderness, and against the corrupt forces of power. Mads Mikkelsen gives a stoic, powerful performance. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning over $10 million on a $7 million budget. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
