Overview
The Last of Us is a 2023 post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO, based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name. The first season is set in a world devastated by a fungal pandemic caused by the Cordyceps fungus, which turns humans into aggressive, mindless creatures called the Infected. The outbreak began in 2003, and the series picks up twenty years later in 2023. The story follows Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor who lost his teenage daughter Sarah in the initial chaos of the outbreak. He is now a smuggler living in the quarantine zone of Boston. He is hired by the leader of the Fireflies, a resistance movement, to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of the city. Ellie is immune to the Cordyceps infection, and the Fireflies believe her blood holds the key to a cure. Joel and Ellie must travel across the United States to a Firefly laboratory in Salt Lake City. The first season follows their journey, exploring themes of love, loss, survival, and the question of whether one life is worth sacrificing for the many. The first season was a massive critical and commercial success, winning eight Primetime Emmy Awards.
