Overview
The Penguin is a 2024 crime drama television series created by Lauren LeFranc for HBO, serving as a spin-off of the 2022 film The Batman. The first season stars Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, a mid-level gangster who is trying to rise to power in the criminal underworld of Gotham City. The series is set one week after the events of The Batman. The city is still flooded, and the power vacuum left by the death of Carmine Falcone has created chaos. Oz sees his opportunity. He is a small, fat, limping man with a bird-like nose and a face covered in scars. He is not physically imposing, but he is cunning, manipulative, and ruthless. He is underestimated by everyone, and he uses that to his advantage. The first season follows Oz as he schemes and murders his way to the top. He forms an alliance with Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), the daughter of Carmine, who has just been released from Arkham Asylum. Sofia is a damaged, unpredictable, and brilliant woman. She and Oz have a complicated relationship: they are allies, rivals, and perhaps something more. The series explores the dark, gritty, and violent underbelly of Gotham, far from the world of Batman. The tone is similar to The Sopranos, a crime family drama with a focus on character and psychology. Colin Farrell is almost unrecognizable under heavy prosthetics, and he delivers a powerful, nuanced performance. The first season was a critical and commercial success, earning over 15 Emmy nominations. It was praised for its writing, its direction, and its performances, especially Farrell and Milioti. A second season has been ordered.
